Sodium Volproate + Volproic Acid or Divalproaxe is a medication primarily used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine headaches. It is useful for the prevention of seizures in those with absence seizures, partial seizures, and generalized seizures.

Overview

  • Divalproex is the most frequently prescribed anticonvulsant medication for BD1
  • Divalproex monotherapy is efficacious in the treatment of BD depression.1
  • The relative risk of response in divalproex-treated patients was approximately twice that observed in placebo-treated patients1
  • Antidepressant effect of Divalproex was comparable to that of quetiapine and lamotrigine1
  • Current guidelines recommend valproate as monotherapy or combination therapy with other agents as first-line or second-line treatment for bipolar depression2
  • Divalproex improved several dimensions of depressive morbidity and reduced the probability of depressive relapse, particularly in patients with manic episodes2
  • Higher response rates and greater remission rates have been seen with sodium valproate when compared to lithium in bipolar disorder patients suffering from manic episodes2
